The community is located about 3 miles away from the town of Chichicastenango, but the road to town is not paved and access to the village becomes difficult during the rainy season. The families of the community are very poor, but the women know the ancestral art of weaving and use it as a supplemental income to provide a superior life for their children. In 2001, eight Chucam families banded together to form a weaving cooperative to make attrbusy patchwork quilts and other embroidered textiles. Their incomes have doubled if not tripled, and dozens of additional Chucam families have become involved. More importantly, the men don't have to leave for months at a time looking for work in the sugar cane fields and many more of the village¿s children are able to stay in school. What is Worldstock? The handdesigned nature of this product will produce minor differences in design and sizing.
